Introduction
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lhasa is a challenging yet profoundly rewarding journey that combines high-altitude adventure with deep spiritual significance. Leading you across the dramatic landscapes of the Himalayas and the vast Tibetan Plateau, this pilgrimage takes you to the sacred Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, two of the most revered spiritual sites in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and the Bon tradition.
Unlike shorter approaches, the route via Lhasa allows for a gradual and well-structured acclimatization while offering rich cultural and religious insight into Tibet. Beginning with visits to historic monasteries, temples, and palaces in Lhasa and Shigatse, travelers gain a deeper understanding of Tibetan Buddhism and Himalayan spirituality before continuing westward toward the remote Kailash region. This measured progression plays a vital role in preparing both the body and mind for the demands of the pilgrimage.
The sacred journey culminates in the Mount Kailash Kora, which begins near the small settlement of Darchen in western Tibet. The circumambulation follows a 52-kilometer trail around the mountain, crossing high-altitude terrain, rugged valleys, glacial streams, and the formidable Dolma La Pass. This section of the yatra is physically demanding and requires good fitness, prior high-altitude exposure, and proper preparation, but it is also the most spiritually significant phase of the journey.
Beyond its physical challenges, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lhasa is a journey of reflection, discipline, and inner transformation. Prayer by the shores of Lake Manasarovar, encounters with ancient monasteries, and time spent in some of the most remote landscapes on Earth create an experience that extends far beyond trekking. With careful planning, experienced leadership, and a respectful approach to the sacred route, this pilgrimage offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to connect deeply with nature, culture, and spiritual tradition.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Kathmandu (1,330 m / 4,364 ft)
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be met by the Expedition Himalaya team and transferred to your hotel. The day is kept relaxed to allow recovery from international travel. Kathmandu’s calm surroundings provide an ideal setting to settle in before the journey begins, with time to rest, organize personal gear, and prepare for the pilgrimage ahead.
Day 2: Kathmandu – Sightseeing, Visa Processing & Kailash Yatra Briefing
The day begins with spiritual sightseeing in Kathmandu, visiting Pashupatinath Temple, one of the holiest Hindu shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. This is followed by a visit to Gujeshwari Temple, an important Shakti Peetha closely linked to the Pashupatinath, and later to Budhanilkantha Temple, home to the sacred Sleeping Vishnu statue.
In the afternoon, Tibet visa and permit formalities are reviewed and finalized. A detailed Kailash Yatra briefing is conducted, covering the kora route, daily walking distances, altitude considerations, packing guidelines, porter arrangements, and important cultural and spiritual protocols to be followed during the pilgrimage.
Day 3: Flight to Lhasa (3,656 m / 11,995 ft)
A spectacular trans-Himalayan flight brings you to Lhasa, crossing some of the highest mountain ranges in the world. Upon arrival, you are received by the Tibetan guide and transferred to the city. The remainder of the day is reserved strictly for rest, with only light walking recommended, allowing the body to begin adjusting to the higher altitude.
Day 4: Lhasa Sightseeing – Potala Palace & Jokhang Temple
This day is dedicated to exploring the spiritual and historical heart of Lhasa. Visits include the iconic Potala Palace, an architectural masterpiece and former winter residence of the Dalai Lama, and Jokhang Temple, the most sacred temple in Tibetan Buddhism. A walk through Barkhor Street offers a close look at Tibetan pilgrimage traditions and daily life, enriching the cultural experience.
Day 5: Lhasa Sightseeing – Sera Monastery & Norbulingka
The morning is spent at Sera Monastery, renowned for its traditional monk debate sessions, providing insight into Tibetan monastic education. Later, visit Norbulingka, the former summer residence of the Dalai Lama, set amidst expansive gardens. This second day in Lhasa plays a vital role in supporting gradual acclimatization before moving westward.
Day 6: Drive to Shigatse (3,845 m / 12,615 ft)
A full-day drive across the vast Tibetan plateau leads to Shigatse, passing rivers, high passes, and traditional settlements along the way. Upon arrival, a visit is made to Tashilhunpo Monastery, the seat of the Panchen Lama and one of Tibet’s most important monasteries, adding spiritual depth to the journey.
Day 7: Drive to Saga (4,640 m / 15,230 ft)
The journey continues west toward Saga through increasingly remote and expansive landscapes. As the altitude rises, the pace of the day is intentionally slowed to support acclimatization. Saga serves as a key transitional point before entering the Kailash–Mansarovar region.
Day 8: Drive to Lake Mansarovar (4,588 m / 15,052 ft)
Today marks arrival at the sacred Lake Manasarovar, revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers alike. On clear days, the first views of Mount Kailash appear across the shimmering waters of the lake. Time is provided for prayer, meditation, and a Kora along the lakeshore, allowing pilgrims to absorb the spiritual significance of this revered site.
Day 9: Drive to Darchen (4,670 m / 15,321 ft)
Early in the morning, puja and spiritual rituals are performed at Lake Mansarovar. After completing the prayers and lunch, the journey continues by road to Darchen, the small settlement that serves as the starting point of the Mount Kailash Kora. The remainder of the day is used for final trek preparations and rest.
Day 10: Drive to Yama Dwar and Trek to Dirapuk (4,920 m / 16,138 ft)
The sacred Mount Kailash Kora formally begins today with a short drive from Darchen to Yam Dwar, revered as the spiritual gateway to Mount Kailash. Passing through Yam Dwar is considered an act of purification, symbolizing entry into the holy realm of Kailash. From here, the trek follows a well-defined trail along the western face of the mountain, gradually ascending through wide valleys shaped by glacial rivers and prayer-flag-lined paths. The walking pace is intentionally steady, allowing pilgrims to acclimatize while absorbing the immense spiritual presence of Kailash. As the day progresses, the dramatic north face of Mount Kailash dominates the landscape, offering powerful, close-up views that many consider the most striking of the entire journey. The walk to Dirapuk is physically moderate but spiritually profound, setting the tone for the days ahead.
Day 11: Trek to Zuthulpuk via Dolma La Pass (5,630 m / 18,471 ft)
his is the most demanding and spiritually significant day of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. The trail begins with a gradual but persistent ascent toward Dolma La Pass, the highest point of the kora and the physical and symbolic climax of the pilgrimage. The climb is slow and deliberate, often undertaken in silence or prayer, as altitude, cold winds, and thin air make this section particularly challenging. At the pass, prayer flags, personal offerings, and symbolic items mark a moment of reflection, release, and renewal for pilgrims. From Dolma La, the trail descends steeply past Gauri Kund, a sacred turquoise lake associated with purity and compassion. The descent then eases into a longer walk through rocky terrain and open valleys before reaching Zutulpuk, a site traditionally linked to the meditation cave of the great yogi Milarepa. This day demands strong endurance, focus, and respect for altitude, but it is widely regarded as the most transformative part of the journey.
Day 12: Trek to shuttle point and drive to Darchen and to Saga
The final day of the kora begins with a relatively gentle walk, allowing pilgrims to complete the last stretch of the sacred circumambulation with a sense of fulfillment and reflection. This section of the trail is less strenuous, providing time to absorb the significance of having completed one full circuit around Mount Kailash. Reaching Darchen marks the formal completion of the kora, a moment often accompanied by quiet gratitude and personal reflection. After regrouping, the journey continues by vehicle toward Saga, gradually descending from the high Kailash region. This descent plays an important role in physical recovery after the intense high-altitude days, while also signaling the transition from the sacred core of the pilgrimage back toward the broader Tibetan plateau.
Day 13: Drive to Kyirong (Nepal–China Border)
The drive heads south toward Kyirong, with a noticeable decrease in altitude and changing landscapes. Immigration formalities are completed at the Nepal–China border before continuing onward to Kerung.
Day 14: Drive to Kathmandu (1,330 m / 4,364 ft)
The return journey to Kathmandu follows the scenic Himalayan route back into Nepal. For those seeking additional comfort and time efficiency, a helicopter flight to Kathmandu can be arranged at an additional cost, subject to weather conditions.
Day 15: International Departure
After completing the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lhasa, you will be transferred to the airport for your onward international departure, carrying with you the spiritual fulfillment and memories of one of the world’s most sacred pilgrimages.

Good!
Exellent guide for solo trekking. The flexibility of the programm was good and everything worked with Expedition Himalaya.
Awesome experience.
This is a one in a lifetime experience, to one of the most remote areas of the world. The whole journey was breathtaking and an excellent experience. We were unfortunate with the weather at the end but that is mountain life. Himalayan experience worked tirelessly to organise helicopter flights off the mountain, along with the other 2000 people stranded at Lukla airport. Big thanks to Ian Pallister for organising this for us. Pasan our lead guide, and Lapa our junior guide. I would thoroughly recommend this company if you want to complete Everest Base camp and other adventures.
Tibet2025_Zanardi
We were a group of 4 family members traveling to Tibet through Kathmandu. EH organized the perfect trip for us. All guides and drivers were excellent from all points of view: professional, friendly, experienced, thoughtful, flexible, reliable, respectful. Prabeen was our guide in Kathmandu. Dawa Sherpa flew with us from Kathmandu to Lhasa and carefully orchestrated every single detail of our Tibet tour, including shopping for picnics in late evenings and last-minute helicopter arrangements. Tashi is THE guide you want in Tibet: all the adjectives above, plus much more, and always in harmony with Dawa for daily decisions. Driver Tsering is simply amazing: great driver, improvised porter, strong communicator with gazes and gestures (not English speaking). We ended up with the feeling of traveling in a group of 7 family members for 2 weeks. The tour included the Kailash kora, up to 5630 mt altitude. EH organized it carefully, so that we arrived acclimatized and suffered a minimum. EH co-owner (with Dawa) Nabin met us personally multiple times in Kathmandu before the Tibet tour and after it, for briefing and farewell. And Niren has been in constant contact with us, in person and by phone. I strongly recommend EH for adventure accompanied by safety and special treats.
