Introduction
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Hilsa is a sacred pilgrimage that follows one of the most traditional and spiritually significant routes to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. Entering the Kailash region through Nepal’s far-western Himalayas, this route combines domestic flights, helicopter transfers, and overland travel, making it both time-efficient and deeply rooted in pilgrimage tradition.
This itinerary is designed to support proper acclimatization and spiritual preparation, with key stops in Purang (Taklakot) before reaching Lake Manasarovar. Pilgrims are given time for prayer, holy rituals, and parikrama at Manasarovar, followed by the revered circumambulation (kora) of Mount Kailash. Each stage of the journey emphasizes devotion, reflection, and respect for the sacred landscape.
Ideal for pilgrims seeking a spiritually focused and well-supported Kailash experience, the Hilsa route offers a balanced blend of comfort, careful planning, and religious significance. Guided by experienced teams and supported by reliable logistics, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Hilsa provides a meaningful and once-in-a-lifetime journey to one of the holiest destinations in the Himalayas.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu (1,330 m / 4,364 ft)
On arrival in Kathmandu, you are received by the Expedition Himalaya team and transferred to your hotel. The day is kept relaxed for rest and recovery after international travel. Time is available to organize luggage, prepare personal items for the pilgrimage, and settle into the journey ahead.
Day 2: Kathmandu – Sightseeing, Visa & Yatra Preparation
The day begins with pilgrimage-focused sightseeing in Kathmandu, starting at Pashupatinath Temple, the most revered Shiva temple in Nepal and a significant spiritual starting point for the Kailash Yatra. This is followed by a visit to Guhyeshwari Temple, one of the important Shakti Peethas closely associated with Pashupatinath, and later to Budhanilkantha Temple, home to the sacred Sleeping Vishnu statue. In the afternoon, Tibet visa documentation and permit formalities are reviewed and finalized. A detailed pilgrimage briefing is conducted, covering spiritual conduct, altitude awareness, kora procedures, walking pace, and health considerations.
Day 3: Fly Kathmandu – Nepalgunj (150 m / 492 ft)
A domestic flight takes you from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj in western Nepal. This transition marks the movement toward the remote far-west region. The remainder of the day is spent resting and preparing for the high-altitude journey beginning the following day.
Day 4: Fly Nepalgunj – Simikot | Heli to Hilsa | Drive to Purang (3,700 m / 12,140 ft)
An early morning flight brings you to Simikot, followed by a helicopter transfer to Hilsa at the Nepal–China border. After completing border and immigration formalities, the journey continues by road into Tibet, reaching Purang, also known as Taklakot. The dramatic change in landscape signals entry into the sacred Kailash region. The remainder of the day is kept light to support acclimatization.
Day 5: Rest & Acclimatization Day
This full day is reserved for acclimatization in Purang. Gentle walks, rest, hydration, and light exploration are encouraged. This pause is essential for preparing the body for higher elevations and for the spiritual intensity of Lake Manasarovar and the Kailash Parikrama.
Day 6: Drive to Lake Mansarovar (4,588 m / 15,052 ft)
A spiritually significant day as you drive to the sacred Lake Manasarovar. Upon arrival, pilgrims perform a holy dip (subject to conditions) and take part in parikrama around selected sections of the lake. Prayer, meditation, and reflection by the lake are central to the day, as Manasarovar is believed to cleanse past sins and purify the soul.
Day 7: Drive to Darchen (4,670 m / 15,321 ft)
After morning prayers and quiet reflection at Mansarovar, the journey continues to Darchen, the traditional base for the Mount Kailash Parikrama. The remainder of the day is spent resting and preparing for the kora, including porter arrangements and a detailed explanation of the Kora days ahead.
Day 8: Trek to Diraphuk (4,920 m / 16,138 ft) via Yam Dwar
The parikrama begins with a short drive to Yam Dwar, the sacred gateway symbolizing entry into the holy domain of Mount Kailash. From here, the trek follows a gradual path along the western face of Mount Kailash, passing prayer flags, mani walls, and glacial streams. The route offers powerful views of the north face of Kailash, creating a deeply spiritual and emotionally moving experience.
Day 9: Trek to Zutulpuk (4,835 m / 15,860 ft) via Dolma La & Gauri Kund
This is the most demanding and sacred day of the Kailash Yatra. The trail ascends gradually toward Dolma La Pass (5,630 m), the highest point of the kora. The climb requires patience, focus, and respect for altitude, often accompanied by prayer and silent reflection. At the pass, pilgrims offer prayer flags and symbolic items before beginning the descent. The trail then passes Gauri Kund, a revered turquoise lake associated with purity and compassion, before continuing to Zutulpuk, traditionally linked to the meditation cave of Milarepa.
Day 10: Trek to Darchen – Purang (3,700 m / 12,140 ft)
The final day of the Kailash Parikrama begins with a gentle and reflective walk from Zutulpuk toward Darchen. This section of the trail is less demanding, allowing pilgrims to complete the sacred circumambulation of Mount Kailash with a sense of fulfillment, gratitude, and quiet contemplation. Many pilgrims use this time for final prayers and personal reflection, acknowledging the spiritual significance of completing one full kora around the holy mountain. Upon reaching Darchen, the group regathers before continuing by vehicle toward Purang. The gradual descent to a lower altitude brings noticeable physical relief and supports recovery after the demanding high-altitude trekking days.
Day 11: Border crossing and Helicopter Flight to Simikot
Following breakfast, the journey moves toward the Nepal–China border at Hilsa, where border and immigration formalities are completed. A helicopter flight then carries you back to Simikot, offering dramatic aerial views of the remote Humla region and surrounding Himalayan landscapes. The rapid descent from the Tibetan Plateau to lower altitude is often felt immediately, bringing physical comfort and a sense of closure to the high-altitude portion of the pilgrimage.
Day 12: Fly Simikot to Nepalgunj and to Kathmandu
A morning domestic flight takes you from Simikot to Nepalgunj, followed by a connecting flight to Kathmandu. This day marks the return from one of Nepal’s most remote regions back to the capital. After days spent in isolated Himalayan landscapes, arriving in Kathmandu offers time to rest, refresh, and reflect on the spiritual journey undertaken.
Day 13: International Departure
At the scheduled time, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward international flight. With the completion of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via the Hilsa route, pilgrims depart carrying spiritual fulfillment, personal transformation, and lasting memories of one of the world’s most sacred pilgrimages.
Day 16: International Departure

Good!
Exellent guide for solo trekking. The flexibility of the programm was good and everything worked with Expedition Himalaya.
Awesome experience.
This is a one in a lifetime experience, to one of the most remote areas of the world. The whole journey was breathtaking and an excellent experience. We were unfortunate with the weather at the end but that is mountain life. Himalayan experience worked tirelessly to organise helicopter flights off the mountain, along with the other 2000 people stranded at Lukla airport. Big thanks to Ian Pallister for organising this for us. Pasan our lead guide, and Lapa our junior guide. I would thoroughly recommend this company if you want to complete Everest Base camp and other adventures.
Tibet2025_Zanardi
We were a group of 4 family members traveling to Tibet through Kathmandu. EH organized the perfect trip for us. All guides and drivers were excellent from all points of view: professional, friendly, experienced, thoughtful, flexible, reliable, respectful. Prabeen was our guide in Kathmandu. Dawa Sherpa flew with us from Kathmandu to Lhasa and carefully orchestrated every single detail of our Tibet tour, including shopping for picnics in late evenings and last-minute helicopter arrangements. Tashi is THE guide you want in Tibet: all the adjectives above, plus much more, and always in harmony with Dawa for daily decisions. Driver Tsering is simply amazing: great driver, improvised porter, strong communicator with gazes and gestures (not English speaking). We ended up with the feeling of traveling in a group of 7 family members for 2 weeks. The tour included the Kailash kora, up to 5630 mt altitude. EH organized it carefully, so that we arrived acclimatized and suffered a minimum. EH co-owner (with Dawa) Nabin met us personally multiple times in Kathmandu before the Tibet tour and after it, for briefing and farewell. And Niren has been in constant contact with us, in person and by phone. I strongly recommend EH for adventure accompanied by safety and special treats.
