Introduction

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Kerung is a sacred pilgrimage that takes devotees on a spiritual journey to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, two of the holiest places for followers of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and the Bon religion. This traditional overland route from Nepal is deeply respected by pilgrims, as it allows a gradual and meaningful approach to the sacred land of Kailash.

Traveling via the Kerung border offers a steady ascent and proper time for acclimatization, helping both the body and mind prepare for the pilgrimage. The journey includes important spiritual stops, time for prayer and reflection, and a special puja at Lake Manasarovar before beginning the holy circumambulation (kora) of Mount Kailash. Every step of the route is filled with religious significance and spiritual purpose.

This yatra is ideal for pilgrims seeking a simple, faith-focused journey rooted in devotion and tradition. With experienced guidance, careful planning, and respect for religious practices, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Kerung offers a peaceful and spiritually fulfilling path to one of the most sacred destinations in the Himalayas.

Day 2: Kathmandu – Sacred Sightseeing & Visa Preparation

The day begins with pilgrimage-focused sightseeing in Kathmandu, starting at Pashupatinath Temple, the most revered Shiva temple in Nepal and a significant spiritual starting point for the Kailash Yatra. This is followed by a visit to Guhyeshwari Temple, one of the important Shakti Peetha closely associated with Pashupatinath, and later to Budhanilkantha Temple, home to the sacred Sleeping Vishnu statue. In the afternoon, Tibet visa documentation and permit formalities are reviewed and finalized. A detailed pilgrimage briefing is conducted, covering spiritual conduct, altitude awareness, kora procedures, walking pace, and health considerations.

Day 5: Acclimatization & Exploration Day

This day is reserved entirely for acclimatization in Saga, a crucial step before entering the high Kailash region. Short walks, light exploration of the surrounding area, and rest are encouraged. This pause significantly reduces the risk of altitude-related issues later in the journey and prepares the body for the sacred sites ahead.

Day 6: Drive to Lake Mansarovar (4,588 m / 15,052 ft)

Today is one of the most spiritually significant days of the yatra as you arrive at the sacred Lake Manasarovar. Revered across multiple faiths, the lake represents purity and spiritual cleansing. On clear days, Mount Kailash can be seen reflecting in the lake’s turquoise waters. Time is allocated for prayer, meditation, and quiet reflection along the lakeshore.

Day 7: Puja & Drive to Darchen (4,670 m / 15,321 ft)

The day begins early at the sacred shores of Lake Manasarovar, where pilgrims participate in a special puja and prayer rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva and the divine energies of the region. This spiritual ceremony is considered a vital part of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, symbolizing purification, gratitude, and mental preparation before approaching Mount Kailash. After completing the rituals and spending reflective time by the lake, the journey continues by road toward Darchen, the traditional starting point of the Mount Kailash Kora. The remainder of the day is dedicated to rest, final preparations, porter arrangements, and a detailed briefing on the upcoming kora days.

Day 8: Drive to Yama Dwar and Trek to Diraphuk (4,920 m / 16,138 ft) via

The kora begins with a short drive to Yam Dwar, the symbolic gateway to Mount Kailash. Passing through Yam Dwar is considered an act of purification and spiritual entry into the sacred realm. From here, the trek follows a gradual trail along the western face of Mount Kailash, accompanied by prayer flags, mani walls, and glacial streams. The walk is steady and contemplative, culminating at Dirapuk with commanding views of the north face of Kailash, regarded as one of the most powerful visual moments of the pilgrimage.

Day 9: Trek to Zutulpuk (4,835 m / 15,860 ft) via Dolma La & Gauri Kund

This is the most demanding and sacred day of the Kailash Yatra. The trail ascends gradually toward Dolma La Pass (5,630 m), the highest point of the kora. The climb requires patience, focus, and respect for altitude, often accompanied by prayer and silent reflection. At the pass, pilgrims offer prayer flags and symbolic items before beginning the descent. The trail then passes Gauri Kund, a revered turquoise lake associated with purity and compassion, before continuing to Zutulpuk, traditionally linked to the meditation cave of Milarepa.

Awesome experience.

This is a one in a lifetime experience, to one of the most remote areas of the world. The whole journey was breathtaking and an excellent experience. We were unfortunate with the weather at the end but that is mountain life. Himalayan experience worked tirelessly to organise helicopter flights off the mountain, along with the other 2000 people stranded at Lukla airport. Big thanks to Ian Pallister for organising this for us. Pasan our lead guide, and Lapa our junior guide. I would thoroughly recommend this company if you want to complete Everest Base camp and other adventures.

Tibet2025_Zanardi

We were a group of 4 family members traveling to Tibet through Kathmandu. EH organized the perfect trip for us. All guides and drivers were excellent from all points of view: professional, friendly, experienced, thoughtful, flexible, reliable, respectful. Prabeen was our guide in Kathmandu. Dawa Sherpa flew with us from Kathmandu to Lhasa and carefully orchestrated every single detail of our Tibet tour, including shopping for picnics in late evenings and last-minute helicopter arrangements. Tashi is THE guide you want in Tibet: all the adjectives above, plus much more, and always in harmony with Dawa for daily decisions. Driver Tsering is simply amazing: great driver, improvised porter, strong communicator with gazes and gestures (not English speaking). We ended up with the feeling of traveling in a group of 7 family members for 2 weeks. The tour included the Kailash kora, up to 5630 mt altitude. EH organized it carefully, so that we arrived acclimatized and suffered a minimum. EH co-owner (with Dawa) Nabin met us personally multiple times in Kathmandu before the Tibet tour and after it, for briefing and farewell. And Niren has been in constant contact with us, in person and by phone. I strongly recommend EH for adventure accompanied by safety and special treats.
