Pilgrimage Tour

This sacred Buddhist pilgrimage journey explores the most important Buddhist sites in Nepal, connecting the spiritual heritage of Kathmandu Valley with the birthplace of Lord Buddha in Lumbini.

Introduction

Nepal is the birthplace of the Buddha. That single fact places this country at the centre of Buddhist pilgrimage in a way very few destinations in the world can claim. Long before it was known for Himalayan trekking, Nepal's valleys and hilltops were home to sacred caves, ancient stupas, and monastery communities that have maintained unbroken practice for well over a thousand years.

This 7-Day Sacred Nepal Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour takes you through the most significant Buddhist sites in Nepal, from the great living stupas and hillside monasteries of the Kathmandu Valley to Lumbini, the UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Buddha was born. The journey covers Boudhanath and Swayambhunath, a full day at Pharping where Guru Padmasambhava attained enlightenment, a pilgrimage to Namobuddha, and two days in Lumbini exploring the Maya Devi Temple, the international Monastic Zone, and the ancient ruins of Tilaurakot where Siddhartha Gautama grew up.

With a certified English-speaking cultural guide and private vehicle throughout, the tour moves at a calm and comfortable pace. Each day has quiet time built in for reflection or personal practice. It is designed for Buddhist practitioners, pilgrims, and thoughtful travelers who want to go beyond surface-level sightseeing and experience Nepal's spiritual traditions the way they have always been lived.

Trip Highlights - 7-Day Sacred Nepal Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour

Walk the Buddhist Circuit of Kathmandu Valley: Begin with the morning kora at Boudhanath Stupa alongside monks and local pilgrims, visit the ancient hilltop stupa of Swayambhunath for panoramic valley views, and attend a guided meditation session at Kopan Monastery, one of the most respected Tibetan Buddhist centres in Nepal.

Explore the Sacred Caves and Monasteries of Pharping: Spend a full day at Pharping, the hillside 23 km south of Kathmandu where Guru Padmasambhava is said to have attained enlightenment in the 8th century. Visit the Asura Cave, the Yangleshö Cave, the Vajrayogini Temple, and the active monastery communities that continue their practice here today.

Pilgrimage to Namobuddha, One of Nepal's Three Holiest Buddhist Sites: Visit the ancient stupa at Namobuddha where the Buddha in a past life is said to have offered his own body to a starving tigress and her cubs. Walk up to the Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery on the ridge above and take in the wide views across the Kavrepalanchok hills on the return.

Two Days at the Birthplace of the Buddha in Lumbini: Stand at the exact birthplace marker inside the Maya Devi Temple, walk the canal-lined Monastic Zone past temples and stupas built by more than twenty countries, visit the World Peace Pagoda, and travel to Tilaurakot where Siddhartha Gautama spent the first twenty-nine years of his life.

Day 2: Swayambhunath | Boudhanath Stupa | Kapan Monastery

We begin the day with a visit to Swayambhunath, the ancient hilltop stupa that has watched over Kathmandu Valley for more than 2,500 years. Climbing the long stone staircase lined with prayer flags and small shrines, we reach the white dome and golden spire of the stupa. Monks, pilgrims, and locals circle the monument, spinning prayer wheels and offering prayers while enjoying wide views across the valley.

From here we drive across the city to Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest and most important Tibetan Buddhist stupas in the world. Pilgrims walk clockwise around the massive mandala-shaped stupa performing the traditional kora, turning prayer wheels and chanting mantras. We take time to walk the kora with the devotees and then enjoy lunch at one of the rooftop cafés overlooking the stupa.

In the afternoon we continue to Kopan Monastery, located on the quiet hills above Boudhanath. Founded by Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Kopan has become one of the most respected Tibetan Buddhist learning centres in Nepal. We visit the main temple, walk through the peaceful monastery grounds, and take part in a short guided meditation session while enjoying the calm atmosphere of the monastery.

Day 3: Day trip to Pharping

Pharping sits about 23 km south of Kathmandu and for Vajrayana Buddhist practitioners it carries a weight close to Bodhgaya. This is the place where Guru Padmasambhava is said to have attained enlightenment in the 8th century, and two sacred caves mark his practice sites. We begin at the Vajrayogini Temple at the base of the steps, one of the five principal Vajrayogini shrines of the Kathmandu Valley, before climbing to the Asura Cave with its statues of Guru Rinpoche and the handprint impression in the rock near the entrance. A short walk below brings us to the Yangleshö Cave. After the caves we visit Neydo Tashi Choeling Monastery, a large active monastery known for its colorful ceremonies and resident monk community. Time to sit in on afternoon prayers if the timing allows. On the return we pass through the village of Dolu to see the large gilded Guru Rinpoche statue.

Day 4: Day trip to Namobuddha

About 40 km east of Kathmandu, Namobuddha is one of the three most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal. According to Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the Bodhisattva who would become the historical Buddha offered his own body to a starving tigress and her cubs at this spot in a past life. A stupa marks the site on the hillside. We walk up to the Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery on the ridge above, a large Kagyu monastery founded by Thrangu Rinpoche with richly decorated interiors and wide views across the surrounding hills. Lunch near the monastery. On the return we take a short walk through Panauti, one of the oldest Newar towns in Nepal, before driving back to Kathmandu.

Day 5: Kathmandu to Lumbini

After breakfast we transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport for the short 30-minute flight to Bhairahawa, then drive to Lumbini. After checking in and lunch we head straight to the Sacred Garden, the UNESCO World Heritage heart of Lumbini. We visit the Maya Devi Temple, built over the exact spot where Queen Mayadevi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama. Inside the temple is the original marker stone identifying the birthplace of the Buddha. Outside, the sacred Pond where Queen Mayadevi bathed before the birth sits quietly among lotus flowers and bodhi trees. We also see the Ashoka Pillar, erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BCE after his own pilgrimage here, and visit the eternal flame. The evening light in the Sacred Garden is something to sit with.

Day 6: Lumbini Full Day

The morning is in the Monastic Zone, a wide planned area running north from the Sacred Garden along a tree-lined canal. The East Monastic Zone holds Theravada monasteries from Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Indochina. The West Monastic Zone holds Mahayana and Vajrayana monasteries from China, Japan, Korea, Germany, and Vietnam. Walking the full length with the canal reflecting the rooftops and stupas on both sides is a genuinely quiet and beautiful experience. We visit the World Peace Pagoda, and the Lumbini Museum inside the Sacred Garden, which holds sculptures, manuscripts, and coins from excavations across the region. In the afternoon we drive 28 km west to Tilaurakot, identified as ancient Kapilavastu and the royal compound where Prince Siddhartha spent his first twenty-nine years. The foundations of the palace are visible and the east and west gates still stand.

Day 7: Lumbini to Kathmandu | International Departure

Wake early and return to the Maya Devi Temple and Sacred Garden one final time before the day visitors arrive. Early morning is the quietest and most meditative time here. Monks from the surrounding monasteries walk the paths. The butter lamps burn inside the small shrines. After breakfast we transfer to Bhairahawa airport for the morning flight back to Kathmandu. Our team will transfer you to your hotel or directly to Tribhuvan International Airport depending on your onward plans. If you have time in the city before departure, we are happy to suggest the best way to spend a few final hours.

Awesome experience.

This is a one in a lifetime experience, to one of the most remote areas of the world. The whole journey was breathtaking and an excellent experience. We were unfortunate with the weather at the end but that is mountain life. Himalayan experience worked tirelessly to organise helicopter flights off the mountain, along with the other 2000 people stranded at Lukla airport. Big thanks to Ian Pallister for organising this for us. Pasan our lead guide, and Lapa our junior guide. I would thoroughly recommend this company if you want to complete Everest Base camp and other adventures.

Tibet2025_Zanardi

We were a group of 4 family members traveling to Tibet through Kathmandu. EH organized the perfect trip for us. All guides and drivers were excellent from all points of view: professional, friendly, experienced, thoughtful, flexible, reliable, respectful. Prabeen was our guide in Kathmandu. Dawa Sherpa flew with us from Kathmandu to Lhasa and carefully orchestrated every single detail of our Tibet tour, including shopping for picnics in late evenings and last-minute helicopter arrangements. Tashi is THE guide you want in Tibet: all the adjectives above, plus much more, and always in harmony with Dawa for daily decisions. Driver Tsering is simply amazing: great driver, improvised porter, strong communicator with gazes and gestures (not English speaking). We ended up with the feeling of traveling in a group of 7 family members for 2 weeks. The tour included the Kailash kora, up to 5630 mt altitude. EH organized it carefully, so that we arrived acclimatized and suffered a minimum. EH co-owner (with Dawa) Nabin met us personally multiple times in Kathmandu before the Tibet tour and after it, for briefing and farewell. And Niren has been in constant contact with us, in person and by phone. I strongly recommend EH for adventure accompanied by safety and special treats.
