The Manaslu Circuit Trek with Tsum Valley is a remote Himalayan journey combining high-altitude adventure with deep Tibetan Buddhist culture, featuring the circuit of Mount Manaslu and the crossing of Larke La Pass for a truly authentic trekking experience.
Introduction
The Manaslu Circuit Trek with Tsum Valley is one of Nepal’s most immersive and culturally rich Himalayan journeys, offering a rare blend of remote mountain landscapes, ancient Tibetan Buddhist heritage, and high-altitude adventure. This extended trek circles Mount Manaslu (8,163 m)—the world’s eighth-highest peak—while venturing deep into the hidden Tsum Valley, a region that remained closed to outsiders until recent decades.
Following the Budhi Gandaki River, the trail moves through dramatic gorges, terraced hillsides, and forested valleys before gradually transitioning into alpine and glacial terrain. As you enter the Tsum Valley, the experience shifts from trekking to true cultural immersion. Traditional stone villages, centuries-old monasteries, mani walls, and prayer flags reflect a way of life deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhism, largely untouched by modern influence.
The journey later rejoins the classic Manaslu Circuit, continuing through high Himalayan villages such as Sama Gaun and Samdo, with constant views of Manaslu, Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, and Kang Guru. A major highlight is the crossing of Larke La Pass (5,106 m), one of the most dramatic high passes in Nepal, offering expansive panoramic views before descending into the alpine basin of Bimthang.
Designed with careful acclimatization and operated by Expedition Himalaya, the Manaslu Circuit Trek with Tsum Valley is ideal for trekkers seeking a quieter, more authentic alternative to Nepal’s busier trekking routes. It is a journey for those who value remoteness, cultural depth, and a genuine Himalayan experience—far from crowds, yet rich in scenery, tradition, and adventure.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,330 m / 4,364 ft)
Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be met by the Expedition Himalaya team and transferred to a comfortable 3-star category hotel in Kathmandu. The remainder of the day is free to rest and recover from international travel or take a short walk around the city to experience Nepal’s vibrant atmosphere.
Day 2: Rest & Trek Preparation in Kathmandu (1,330 m / 4,364 ft)
This day is reserved for trek preparation and final arrangements. Equipment checks, packing assistance, and permit verification are completed, followed by a detailed trek briefing covering route conditions, altitude safety, and daily walking expectations.
In the evening, a welcome dinner at an authentic Nepali restaurant is hosted, offering an introduction to Nepali cuisine and an opportunity to meet your trekking team.
Day 3: Drive to Machha Khola (900 m / 2,953 ft)
A scenic drive takes you west from Kathmandu, following the Trishuli River before entering the Budhi Gandaki Valley. The road passes terraced farmland, small roadside towns, waterfalls, and deep river gorges. As the road narrows, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged, marking the transition into the remote Manaslu region.
Day 4: Trek to Jagat (1,410 m / 4,626 ft)
The trek begins along the Budhi Gandaki River, crossing suspension bridges and winding through forested hillsides. The trail passes traditional Gurung villages, cultivated fields, and steep rocky sections carved into the cliffs. Subtropical vegetation such as banana plants, bamboo, and ferns dominate this lower section.
Day 5: Trek to Lokpa (2,240 m / 7,349 ft)
The trail ascends through narrow gorges and forested ridges. Lokpa marks the gateway to the Tsum Valley, offering the first sense of isolation and wilderness. Birdlife is abundant in this forested section.
Day 6: Trek to Chumling (2,386 m / 7,828 ft)
Entering the Tsum Valley, the trail traverses pine and rhododendron forests. Tibetan-style houses, mani walls, and prayer flags signal a strong Buddhist influence. Views of Ganesh Himal begin to appear along the route.
Day 7: Trek to Chhokang Paro (3,031 m / 9,944 ft)
The valley opens into cultivated fields and stone villages. Chortens and monasteries line the trail, and the surrounding peaks—including Ganesh Himal and Sringi Himal—frame the landscape. The cultural atmosphere here is calm and deeply traditional.
Day 8: Trek to Mu Gompa (3,700 m / 12,139 ft)
The trail ascends gradually into higher alpine terrain. Mu Gompa, the largest monastery in the Tsum Valley, is a spiritual center of the region. The landscape becomes open and windswept, with sparse vegetation and wide Himalayan views.
Day 9: Acclimatization & Exploration in Upper Tsum Valley (3,700 m / 12,139 ft)
A day dedicated to acclimatization and exploration around Mu Gompa and nearby monasteries. The area is rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture and offers opportunities to observe blue sheep and Himalayan birds in the surrounding hills.
Day 10: Trek to Chumling (2,386 m / 7,828 ft)
Retracing the route, the trail descends through forested slopes and traditional villages. The warmer temperatures and richer vegetation mark a clear contrast from the upper valley.
Day 11: Trek to Deng (1,860 m / 6,102 ft)
The trail rejoins the main Manaslu Circuit route, following the Budhi Gandaki River through dramatic gorges, waterfalls, and stone settlements influenced by Tibetan culture.
Day 12: Trek to Namrung (2,660 m / 8,727 ft)
Ascending through pine and rhododendron forests, the climate becomes cooler and quieter. From Namrung, the first clear views of Manaslu (8,163 m) appear on clear days.
Day 13: Trek to Sama Gaun (3,520 m / 11,549 ft)
The landscape opens into wide alpine valleys dotted with yak pastures, mani walls, and stone houses. Sama Gaun is a culturally rich village and an important acclimatization point, offering impressive views of Manaslu and nearby glaciers.
Day 14: Rest Day – Manaslu Base Camp & Birendra Lake (4,900 m / 16,076 ft)
A planned rest day hike leads toward Birendra Lake and Manaslu Base Camp. The route crosses alpine meadows and glacial terrain, providing close-up views of Manaslu North Face, icefalls, and surrounding peaks.
Day 15: Trek to Samdo (3,860 m / 12,664 ft)
The trail follows an open alpine valley with minimal vegetation and expansive mountain views. Samdo lies near the Tibetan border and reflects strong Tibetan cultural influence and a crisp high-altitude environment.
Day 16: Trek to Dharamsala / Larke Phedi (4,480 m / 14,698 ft)
A steady climb over rocky terrain and glacial moraines leads to the base of the high pass. The surroundings become barren and exposed, emphasizing the scale of the high Himalayas.
Day 17: Trek to Bhimthang (3,720 m / 12,205 ft) via Larke La (5,106 m / 16,929 ft)
An early start is essential today for the crossing of Larke La Pass, the highest point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The trail ascends gradually over rocky terrain and glacial moraines, with expansive views of surrounding Himalayan peaks as daylight spreads across the high alpine landscape. As you approach the pass at 5,106 m / 16,929 ft, the environment becomes stark and dramatic, dominated by snowfields, wind-sculpted ridges, and vast open horizons.
From the top of the pass, panoramic views unfold across Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II, marking one of the most rewarding viewpoints of the entire trek. After spending time at the pass, the route descends steadily into the broad glacial valley of Bimthang.
Day 18: Trek to Goa (2,560 m / 8,399 ft)
Descending through rhododendron and pine forests, the trail passes rivers, waterfalls, and grazing areas. Wildlife such as langur monkeys and Himalayan birds may be seen.
Day 19: Trek to Tilje (2,300 m / 7,546 ft) & Drive to Besisahar (760 m / 2,493 ft)
The trail passes cultivated farmland and traditional villages before reaching Tilje. From here, a drive takes you to Besisahar, marking the end of the trekking section.
Day 20: Drive from Besisahar to Kathmandu (1,330 m / 4,364 ft)
A scenic drive returns to Kathmandu via river valleys and mid-hill settlements. The remainder of the day is free to rest or explore the city.

Good!
Exellent guide for solo trekking. The flexibility of the programm was good and everything worked with Expedition Himalaya.
Awesome experience.
This is a one in a lifetime experience, to one of the most remote areas of the world. The whole journey was breathtaking and an excellent experience. We were unfortunate with the weather at the end but that is mountain life. Himalayan experience worked tirelessly to organise helicopter flights off the mountain, along with the other 2000 people stranded at Lukla airport. Big thanks to Ian Pallister for organising this for us. Pasan our lead guide, and Lapa our junior guide. I would thoroughly recommend this company if you want to complete Everest Base camp and other adventures.

We were a group of 4 family members traveling to Tibet through Kathmandu. EH organized the perfect trip for us. All guides and drivers were excellent from all points of view: professional, friendly, experienced, thoughtful, flexible, reliable, respectful. Prabeen was our guide in Kathmandu. Dawa Sherpa flew with us from Kathmandu to Lhasa and carefully orchestrated every single detail of our Tibet tour, including shopping for picnics in late evenings and last-minute helicopter arrangements. Tashi is THE guide you want in Tibet: all the adjectives above, plus much more, and always in harmony with Dawa for daily decisions. Driver Tsering is simply amazing: great driver, improvised porter, strong communicator with gazes and gestures (not English speaking). We ended up with the feeling of traveling in a group of 7 family members for 2 weeks. The tour included the Kailash kora, up to 5630 mt altitude. EH organized it carefully, so that we arrived acclimatized and suffered a minimum. EH co-owner (with Dawa) Nabin met us personally multiple times in Kathmandu before the Tibet tour and after it, for briefing and farewell. And Niren has been in constant contact with us, in person and by phone. I strongly recommend EH for adventure accompanied by safety and special treats.
