A close Himalayan escape shaped by culture, valleys, and high mountain views.
Introduction
The Langtang Valley Trek offers a rewarding Himalayan journey close to Kathmandu, combining mountain scenery, cultural depth, and accessible high-altitude trekking. Located within Langtang National Park, the trail follows the Langtang River north through forested hills, traditional Tamang villages, and wide alpine valleys beneath snow-covered peaks. Despite its proximity to the capital, Langtang feels remote and unspoiled, making it one of Nepal’s most authentic trekking experiences.
As the trail ascends, landscapes shift from subtropical forests of bamboo and rhododendron to open high-mountain terrain dominated by glaciers and steep valley walls. Trekkers are rewarded with views of Langtang Lirung (7,227 m), surrounding peaks, and dramatic icefalls above the upper valley. The region is also rich in wildlife and plant diversity, with Langtang National Park protecting a wide range of Himalayan ecosystems.
Equally distinctive is the cultural experience. The Langtang Valley is home to the Tamang people, whose traditions, monasteries, prayer flags, and stone-built villages reflect strong Tibetan Buddhist influences. The trek culminates at Kyanjin Gompa, a historic mountain settlement and spiritual center set against a backdrop of glaciers and high peaks.
Carefully paced and suitable for trekkers with a moderate level of fitness, the Langtang Valley Trek balances adventure with comfort and cultural connection. With experienced local guides and thoughtful planning, Expedition Himalaya presents this journey as a meaningful introduction to Himalayan trekking—rich in scenery, culture, and a strong sense of place.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu (1,330 m / 4,364 ft)
Arrive in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital city. Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you are welcomed by the Expedition Himalaya team and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free to rest after international travel or take a short walk nearby to experience the city’s atmosphere.
Day 2: Rest & Trek Preparation Day in Kathmandu (1,330 m / 4,364 ft)
This day is reserved for trek preparation and rest. A detailed briefing is conducted covering the route, altitude considerations, and safety procedures. Time is available for final equipment checks and last-minute purchases. The relaxed schedule allows proper preparation before heading into the mountains.
Day 3: Drive to Dhunche (1,960 m / 6,430 ft)
The journey begins with a scenic drive north of Kathmandu, following winding mountain roads through terraced hillsides, river valleys, and rural settlements. As the road climbs, forested slopes and distant peaks come into view. Dhunche, the district headquarters of Rasuwa, serves as the gateway to Langtang National Park.
Day 4: Trek to Chandanbari (Sing Gompa) (3,330 m / 10,925 ft)
The trek starts with a steady ascent through pine, oak, and rhododendron forests. The trail passes small settlements and open clearings, gradually gaining elevation. Chandanbari, also known as Sing Gompa, is home to a monastery and a traditional cheese factory, offering a peaceful mountain setting.
Day 5: Trek to Gosaikunda (4,380 m / 14,370 ft)
The trail climbs higher into alpine terrain as trees thin and the landscape opens. Along the way, several smaller lakes appear before reaching the sacred Gosaikunda Lake. Surrounded by rocky slopes and snow-capped ridges, Gosaikunda holds deep spiritual significance for both Hindus and Buddhists and offers a striking high-altitude atmosphere.
Day 6: Exploration Around Gosaikunda (4,380 m / 14,370 ft)
This day is dedicated to exploration around the Gosaikunda lake. Gentle walks around the main lake and visits to nearby smaller lakes allow time for the body to adjust to altitude while taking in the dramatic alpine surroundings. The area’s spiritual significance, combined with open views of surrounding ridges and peaks, creates a quiet and reflective atmosphere. The day is paced slowly, focusing on hydration, rest, and enjoying the high Himalayan environment.
Day 7: Trek to Chandanbari (Sing Gompa) (3,330 m / 10,925 ft)
The return journey begins with a steady descent from the high lakes. The trail gradually leaves alpine terrain and re-enters rhododendron and pine forests, where the air becomes warmer and vegetation more abundant. Chandanbari, also known as Sing Gompa, sits in a peaceful forested setting and marks a comfortable transition back toward lower elevations.
Day 8: Trek to Dhunche (1,960 m / 6,430 ft)
The trail continues downhill through forested slopes and small settlements within Langtang National Park. The steady descent allows for a relaxed pace, with changing vegetation and occasional views back toward the higher ridgelines. Arriving in Dhunche marks the completion of the trekking portion of the journey.
Day 9: Drive to Kathmandu (1,330 m / 4,364 ft)
A road journey returns you to Kathmandu, retracing the scenic mountain route. The remainder of the day is free for rest, exploration, or reflection on the trek.

Good!
Exellent guide for solo trekking. The flexibility of the programm was good and everything worked with Expedition Himalaya.
Awesome experience.
This is a one in a lifetime experience, to one of the most remote areas of the world. The whole journey was breathtaking and an excellent experience. We were unfortunate with the weather at the end but that is mountain life. Himalayan experience worked tirelessly to organise helicopter flights off the mountain, along with the other 2000 people stranded at Lukla airport. Big thanks to Ian Pallister for organising this for us. Pasan our lead guide, and Lapa our junior guide. I would thoroughly recommend this company if you want to complete Everest Base camp and other adventures.
Tibet2025_Zanardi
We were a group of 4 family members traveling to Tibet through Kathmandu. EH organized the perfect trip for us. All guides and drivers were excellent from all points of view: professional, friendly, experienced, thoughtful, flexible, reliable, respectful. Prabeen was our guide in Kathmandu. Dawa Sherpa flew with us from Kathmandu to Lhasa and carefully orchestrated every single detail of our Tibet tour, including shopping for picnics in late evenings and last-minute helicopter arrangements. Tashi is THE guide you want in Tibet: all the adjectives above, plus much more, and always in harmony with Dawa for daily decisions. Driver Tsering is simply amazing: great driver, improvised porter, strong communicator with gazes and gestures (not English speaking). We ended up with the feeling of traveling in a group of 7 family members for 2 weeks. The tour included the Kailash kora, up to 5630 mt altitude. EH organized it carefully, so that we arrived acclimatized and suffered a minimum. EH co-owner (with Dawa) Nabin met us personally multiple times in Kathmandu before the Tibet tour and after it, for briefing and farewell. And Niren has been in constant contact with us, in person and by phone. I strongly recommend EH for adventure accompanied by safety and special treats.
