A close Himalayan escape shaped by culture, valleys, and high mountain views.
Introduction
The Langtang Valley Trek offers a rewarding Himalayan journey close to Kathmandu, combining mountain scenery, cultural depth, and accessible high-altitude trekking. Located within Langtang National Park, the trail follows the Langtang River north through forested hills, traditional Tamang villages, and wide alpine valleys beneath snow-covered peaks. Despite its proximity to the capital, Langtang feels remote and unspoiled, making it one of Nepal’s most authentic trekking experiences.
As the trail ascends, landscapes shift from subtropical forests of bamboo and rhododendron to open high-mountain terrain dominated by glaciers and steep valley walls. Trekkers are rewarded with views of Langtang Lirung (7,227 m), surrounding peaks, and dramatic icefalls above the upper valley. The region is also rich in wildlife and plant diversity, with Langtang National Park protecting a wide range of Himalayan ecosystems.
Equally distinctive is the cultural experience. The Langtang Valley is home to the Tamang people, whose traditions, monasteries, prayer flags, and stone-built villages reflect strong Tibetan Buddhist influences. The trek culminates at Kyanjin Gompa, a historic mountain settlement and spiritual center set against a backdrop of glaciers and high peaks.
Carefully paced and suitable for trekkers with a moderate level of fitness, the Langtang Valley Trek balances adventure with comfort and cultural connection. With experienced local guides and thoughtful planning, Expedition Himalaya presents this journey as a meaningful introduction to Himalayan trekking—rich in scenery, culture, and a strong sense of place.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu (1,330 m / 4,364 ft)
Arrive in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital city and cultural center. Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you are received by the Expedition Himalaya team and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free to rest after international travel or take a short walk nearby to experience the city’s atmosphere.
Day 2: Rest & Trek Preparation Day in Kathmandu (1,330 m / 4,364 ft)
This day is reserved for trek preparation and rest. Time is available for equipment checks, last-minute purchases, and a detailed trek briefing. The relaxed schedule allows you to recover from travel and prepare mentally and physically for the journey into the Langtang region.
Day 3: Drive to Syabrubesi (1,550 m / 5,085 ft)
The journey begins with a scenic drive north from Kathmandu, following winding mountain roads through terraced hillsides, river valleys, and rural settlements. As the road climbs, views of forested slopes and distant peaks begin to appear. Syabrubesi, located along the Bhote Koshi River, marks the gateway to Langtang Valley.
Day 4: Trek to Lama Hotel (2,380 m / 7,808 ft)
The trek starts along the Langtang River, passing through subtropical forest and small villages. The trail gradually ascends through bamboo and rhododendron forest, an area known for wildlife including red pandas and langur monkeys. Lama Hotel sits in a forested clearing, offering a quiet mountain setting.
Day 5: Trek to Mundu (3,430 m / 11,253 ft)
Leaving the forest behind, the trail climbs steadily as the valley opens and the landscape becomes more alpine. You pass traditional Tamang settlements, prayer flags, mani walls, and chortens reflecting strong Tibetan Buddhist influence. Mundu lies in the upper Langtang Valley, surrounded by wide pastures and mountain views.
Day 6: Trek to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m / 12,697 ft)
The trail continues gently through open valley terrain with increasing views of Langtang Lirung and surrounding peaks. The environment becomes stark and high-altitude in character. Kyanjin Gompa is the spiritual and cultural heart of the valley, home to an ancient monastery and set beneath towering glaciers and snow-covered mountains.
Day 7: Exploration Day in Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m / 12,697 ft)
A full day is dedicated to exploration. Optional hikes to nearby viewpoints or ridges offer panoramic views of Langtang Lirung, Yala Peak, and surrounding glaciers. The day also provides time to explore the village, observe local life, and enjoy the peaceful high-mountain atmosphere.
Day 8: Trek to Lama Hotel (2,380 m / 7,808 ft)
The return journey begins, retracing the route back down the valley. Descending through alpine meadows and forested trails, the warmer air and thicker vegetation gradually return. The familiar trail offers a different perspective as you move back into lower elevations.
Day 9: Trek to Syabrubesi (1,550 m / 5,085 ft)
Continuing the descent, the trail passes through forested sections and riverside paths. The sound of flowing water and birdlife becomes more prominent as you approach Syabrubesi, marking the end of the trekking portion of the journey.
Day 10: Drive to Kathmandu (1,330 m / 4,364 ft)
A road journey returns you to Kathmandu, following the same scenic mountain route. The afternoon is free to rest, explore the city, or enjoy time reflecting on the trek.

Good!
Exellent guide for solo trekking. The flexibility of the programm was good and everything worked with Expedition Himalaya.
Awesome experience.
This is a one in a lifetime experience, to one of the most remote areas of the world. The whole journey was breathtaking and an excellent experience. We were unfortunate with the weather at the end but that is mountain life. Himalayan experience worked tirelessly to organise helicopter flights off the mountain, along with the other 2000 people stranded at Lukla airport. Big thanks to Ian Pallister for organising this for us. Pasan our lead guide, and Lapa our junior guide. I would thoroughly recommend this company if you want to complete Everest Base camp and other adventures.
Tibet2025_Zanardi
We were a group of 4 family members traveling to Tibet through Kathmandu. EH organized the perfect trip for us. All guides and drivers were excellent from all points of view: professional, friendly, experienced, thoughtful, flexible, reliable, respectful. Prabeen was our guide in Kathmandu. Dawa Sherpa flew with us from Kathmandu to Lhasa and carefully orchestrated every single detail of our Tibet tour, including shopping for picnics in late evenings and last-minute helicopter arrangements. Tashi is THE guide you want in Tibet: all the adjectives above, plus much more, and always in harmony with Dawa for daily decisions. Driver Tsering is simply amazing: great driver, improvised porter, strong communicator with gazes and gestures (not English speaking). We ended up with the feeling of traveling in a group of 7 family members for 2 weeks. The tour included the Kailash kora, up to 5630 mt altitude. EH organized it carefully, so that we arrived acclimatized and suffered a minimum. EH co-owner (with Dawa) Nabin met us personally multiple times in Kathmandu before the Tibet tour and after it, for briefing and farewell. And Niren has been in constant contact with us, in person and by phone. I strongly recommend EH for adventure accompanied by safety and special treats.
